About Pretty Photos
Pretty Photos brings the Unsplash photo library to your website. Don’t use AI slop. License real photographs taken by real photographers. For free!
Pretty Photos uses metadata from Unsplash to populate attributions, photo credits, and alt text. All you need to do is find your favorite photo and add it–directly in the WordPress editor!
Pretty Photos grew out of a simple frustration: adding a good photograph to a website takes too many steps. Searching another site, downloading files, uploading them again, and remembering credits and alt text can interrupt your workflow.
We created Pretty Photos to make that process easier—and to help keep real photography at the heart of the web by connecting website directly with images made by real photographers. Pretty Photos helps you build a beautiful, accessible website while giving credit to artists.
Frequently asked questions
What is Pretty Photos?
Pretty Photos is a WordPress plugin that lets you find and add Unsplash photography without leaving your website’s editor.
How does it work?
Open the Pretty Photos search window, enter a subject or keyword, and browse the results. Preview a photograph, then insert it into your content or set it as your featured image.
Does Pretty Photos generate images with AI?
No. Pretty Photos searches Unsplash’s existing image library. It doesn’t generate images.
Can I search for horizontal or vertical photos?
Yes. Filter results by landscape, portrait, or square orientation to find photographs that suit your layout.
Can I replace a photo I’ve already added?
Yes. Select an Image block and use Pretty Photos to choose a replacement. The block keeps its layout and styling while the photo, alt text, and credit update.
Does Pretty Photos credit the photographer?
Yes. Photos inserted into your content include linked photographer and Unsplash credits. Featured-image credits are also supported where your theme allows them to appear.
Does Pretty Photos add alt text?
Pretty Photos uses the photograph’s available description as a starting point for alt text. Review and edit it in WordPress so it describes what the image contributes to your page.
Do I need to download and upload photos myself?
No. You can search, preview, and insert photographs directly through Pretty Photos, without saving files to your computer first.
Can I change an image’s size or crop afterward?
Yes. Once a photo is inserted, you can use WordPress’s Image block controls to adjust its size, aspect ratio, and other display settings.
Is Pretty Photos free?
Pretty Photos Basic is the free tier. An optional paid Pro version is planned for additional tools. Pro pricing and availability will be announced when it is ready.
Do I need an Unsplash account or API key?
The public setup process is being finalized while Unsplash approval is pending. We’ll publish the account and API connection requirements with the release instructions.
Can I use the photos on a business or commercial website?
Yes. The Unsplash License permits commercial use. Depending on how you use a photo, additional permission may be needed for recognizable people, brands, or copyrighted works shown in it. See Unsplash’s guidance on releases and trademarks.
Are photos saved to my Media Library or loaded from Unsplash?
Photos inserted into page content are loaded directly from Unsplash’s image servers rather than saved as local image files in your Media Library. Your Image block stores the photo URL, alt text, and linked credits.
Does Pretty Photos work with the Classic Editor and page builders?
Pretty Photos is designed for the WordPress block editor (Gutenberg). Classic Editor and third-party page-builder integrations are not currently supported.
What’s included in Pretty Photos Pro?
Planned Pro tools include a Sitewide Image Audit, Brand Collections for consistent imagery, and Smart Crop to keep subjects properly framed. Smart natural-language search is also being explored. These features are in development; final availability will be announced before release.
Where can I get help or report a problem?
Email support@prettyplugins.com. For troubleshooting, include your Pretty Photos and WordPress versions, the editor you’re using, and a brief description of what happened. Screenshots and steps to reproduce the issue are helpful.
